Ingredient Notes

All other ingredients and measurements can be found in the recipe card towards the bottom of this post.

  • Sauce ingredients. Mix mayonnaise and Worcestershire for the sauce.
  • Onions. Use yellow or white onions, for a delicious caramelized flavor.
  • Bell peppers. Use red, orange, or green bell peppers color and sweetness.
  • Jalapeños. Adds a mild heat. Omit for less spice.
  • Stir fry beef. Use shaved steak, ribeye steak, or roast beef.
  • Seasonings. I like to use Montreal seasoning for my steak seasoning blend. I mixed it with garlic powder and fresh thyme.
  • Worcestershire sauce. Adds a rich, umami flavor.
  • Sliders. A pack of 12 dinner rolls will work perfectly for this recipe. I like to use King’s Hawaiian sweet rolls.
  • Banana peppers. Adds a spicy kick. You can also use pickled jalapeños or omit for less spice.
  • Provolone cheese. Has a mild, creamy flavor. You can use any cheese that melts well, like mozzarella, Swiss, or American cheese.
  • Butter. Melted and brushed over the sliders for a crisp and buttery flavor.

Recipe Variations

  • Vegetarian. Make this vegetarian by using mushrooms instead of beef.
  • Gluten-free. Use gluten-free dinner rolls and make sure your Worcestershire sauce is labeled gluten-free.

Steps To Make Philly Cheesesteak Sliders

An overhead image of making the sauce and cooking the cheesesteak filling.

Step One. Make the sauce by whisking the mayo and Worcestershire sauce together in a small bowl. Set aside.

Step Two. Whisk the seasonings in a small bowl. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, then add sliced peppers, Jalapeño, onions, and half of the mixed seasonings. Sauté on high until they are sweating and lightly charred, about 6-8 minutes. The more they cook down, the easier it will be to cut through the rolls.

Step Three. Add the chopped steak to the skillet in a single layer. Add the other half of seasonings to the steak and 1-2 tsp of Worcestershire sauce.

Step Four. Without touching the steak, sear until golden brown for 2-3 minutes. Flip the steak slices and continue to cook until browned, 1-2 more minutes.

Step Five. Add the peppers and onions back into skillet with the cooked steak. Mix together well, take the pan off the heat and prepare the slider rolls.

Step Six. Add the steak and veggie mixture over the bottom half of the slider buns, evenly. Top with cheese slices. Add little dollops of the mayo sauce around the top of the steak mix. Add chopped banana peppers on the top. Brush with melted butter and bake in the oven for about 10-12 minutes, or until the tips of the buns are lightly browned.

What to Serve with Philly Cheesesteak Sliders

Serve these sliders as an afternoon snack or party appetizer. They go well with appetizers like French Fries, Zucchini Fries, BBQ Cauliflower Wings, and Baked Jalapeno Poppers. You can also serve with BBQ side dishes like Baked Beans, Dill Pickle Potato Salad, or Kale Slaw.

Recipe Tips

  • Slice beef thinly. Make sure the steak is thinly and uniformly sliced to make easier and faster to cook it.
  • Use high heat. Wait until the skillet is on high heat before adding the steak to get a good sear.
  • Melt the cheese. If the cheese isn’t fully melted, you can remove the top buns halfway through baking to allow the cheese to melt completely before adding the top buns back on.

Make Ahead and Storage Tips

Prep the ingredients up to two days in advance and cook and assemble the sliders right before serving. Make the sauce and store it in a bowl. You can also slice and season the steak and vegetables and refrigerate for up to two days.

To store leftovers, wrap them in an aluminum foil or keep them in an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3 days. Reheat in a microwave for 1-2 minutes or on a skillet over medium heat.

Cook: 30 minutes
Total: 50 minutes
Servings: 6 people

Equipment

  • 1 large skillet
  • 1 baking sheet

Ingredients

Sauce

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce

Peppers/Onions/Steak

  • 2 tsp olive oil, separated
  • 1 sweet yellow onion, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 green or orange bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 jalapeño, chopped
  • 1 lb shaved or stir fry beef
  • 1 tbsp steak seasoning blend, I used Montreal Seasoning
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1-2 tsp fresh thyme, or died thyme
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, or soy sauce

Sliders

  • 1 12 pack of sliders
  • ¼ cup banana peppers, chopped, optional
  • 4-6 slices provolone, or cheese of choice
  • 1 tbsp melted butter, for topping buns

Instructions

Make the Sauce

  • In a small bowl whisk the mayo and Worcestershire sauce together.

Cook the Peppers & Steak

  • Preheat the oven to 400ºF
  • In a small bowl whisk together all the seasonings (steak seasoning, garlic, thyme)
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is heated, add the sliced peppers, Jalapeño and onions add half of the mixed seasonings. Sauté on high until they are sweating and lightly charred. About 6-8 minutes. The more they cook down the easier it will be to cut through the rolls.
  • Transfer the peppers to the side in a bowl. In the same skillet, add 1 tsp of oil.
  • Add the chopped steak to the skillet in a single layer. Add the other half of seasonings to the steak and 1-2 tsp of Worcestershire sauce.
  • Without touching the steak, sear until golden brown for 2-3 minutes. Flip the steak slices and continue to cook until browned, 1-2 more minutes.
  • Add the peppers and onions back into skillet with the cooked steak. Mix together well, take the pan off the heat and prepare the slider rolls.

Preparing the sliders

  • Slice slider rolls in half horizontally, while keeping the 12 pack of buns intact (practice patience here it can be tricky). Place the bottom of the rolls onto a baking sheet. Spread the mayo mix thinly on rolls.
  • Next, add steak mixture over the bottom half of the buns, evenly. Top with cheese slices. I like to break up the cheese and push it into the steak mix a bit to help with melting. Add little dollops of the mayo sauce around the top of the steak mix if using. Add chopped banana peppers to the top.
  • Next, add the top half of the slider buns. Brush the tops with melted butter

Bake The Sliders

  • Bake the sliders in the oven for about 10-12 minutes or until the tips of the buns are lightly browned. ( You can also take the top sheet of buns off to let the cheese melt more if needed before pulling from the oven and adding the top on.)
  • Let them cook for a minute and use a sharp knife to slice the buns into 12. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Make sure the steak is thinly and uniformly sliced to make easier and faster to cook it.
  • Use high heat when cooking the steak to get a good sear.
  • If the cheese isn’t fully melted, you can remove the top buns halfway through baking to allow the cheese to melt completely before adding the top buns back on.
To store leftovers, wrap them in an aluminum foil or keep them in an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3 days. Reheat in a microwave for 1-2 minutes or on a skillet over medium heat.

  1. Hi Bailey! Do you have a video of the Phil’s cheese sliders on fb or Instagram? Thank yiu

    1. Hi Samia! I do have one, coming very soon on Instagram, stay tuned!

    1. Yes! Absolutely, just be sure the cook the chicken a bit longer than the steak (165°). You can also use shredded rotisserie chicken and skip the steak seasoning since it’s already heavily seasoned.
