Why Make Chicken Apple Sausage
If you haven’t tried chicken apple sausage, you’ve been missing out. The combination of chicken and apples has just the right balance of sweet and savory. They’re also naturally gluten-free. It’s so good that you’ll be making it on repeat!
- Protein-packed meal. This recipe is high in protein because of the chicken. Pair it with my cottage cheese eggs and whole wheat bread or brown rice for a healthy meal.
- Easy fall recipe. It’s a quick recipe that’s packed with all the delicious fall flavors! For a unique twist, try out my sweet potato skillet.
- Great for meal prep. These chicken sausage patties are easy to make in advance, making them perfect for meal prepping. I like to make a big batch of this so I can freeze it and cook it later.
Ingredient Notes
All other ingredients and measurements can be found in the recipe card towards the bottom of this post.
- Ground chicken. If you don’t have ground chicken, you can use boneless, skinless chicken breast and make your own ground chicken in the food processor.
- Gala apples. I like using gala apples because they’re mild and sweet, but you can also use Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples if you want a sweet-tart flavor.
- Onions. Use yellow or sweet onions.
- Seasonings. You’ll need garlic powder, celery salt or sea salt, nutmeg, celery seed, dried thyme, mustard powder, and chipotle powder. Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for some heat.
- Oil. Use olive oil or any neutral oil, like vegetable oil or avocado oil.
Variations
Swap the chicken. You can use different meat like ground turkey or pork to change up flavor.
Steps To Make Homemade Chicken Apple Sausage
Step One. In a large bowl, add ground chicken, chopped apples, onions, and seasonings to make the sausage mixture. Use a ¼ measuring cup to scoop out the meat. Form it into patties and add them to a large skillet. I like using cast iron because it gives it a beautiful, browned crust.
Step Two. Working in batches, add chicken patties in a single layer and cook for 5-6 minutes. Flip and cook for another 3 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and crisp and the center is tender and cooked through (patties will take longer if they are thick). Serve with breakfast or enjoy on a salad.
Recipe Tips
- Grate or chop the apples finely to evenly combine them with the chicken and onions.
- Preheat and oil the skillet well before adding the patties to get a golden brown crust.
- Before cooking, make sure the patties are flattened to about ½ inch thick so that you can easily cook them throughout. If you have thicker patties, you’ll need to fry them for a slightly longer time.
How to Store Sausage Patties
Make these ahead by forming the patties and storing them for later. You can store raw patties in the fridge for 2 days and in the freezer for 3 months. Thaw and cook as instructed!
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. You can also freeze them for up to 3 months. To reheat, microwave for a minute or reheat on a stovetop on medium heat for about 5 minutes.
Recipe FAQs
Chill the patties for about 30 minutes before cooking to help them hold together. You can also add a binder like breadcrumbs or an egg.
Yes, you can. Preheat your oven to 375°F and place the patties on a baking sheet. Bake it for about 20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they are fully cooked and browned.
