Why Make This Margherita Flatbread

This flatbread is so easy to make, it requires minimal ingredients, it’s fresh and perfect for lunch or a light dinner. You can also serve this as an appetizer, guests will love it, my friends do!

This meal is customizable, choose any toppings and cheese of choice or go with the classic options I provide. You can make this in the air fryer, or the oven. This comes together within 20 minutes, the balsamic glaze makes all the difference. You can also try my BBQ Chicken Flatbread for a different flavor composition.

What Is Margherita Flatbread

Margherita pizza is a typical Neapolitan pizza, made with San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, salt, and extra-virgin olive oil. This recipe is on a flatbread instead of a pizza crust. It’s light, creamy, salty and just darn delicious.

Ingredients Needed

Ingredients for the recipe on a grey counter in small dishes.
  • Flatbread. You want a nice sized flatbread with lumps, the more lumps the better in my opinion. You can find this in the bread aisle at most all grocery stores. You can also use Naan bread if you would prefer.
  • Olive Oil. A high quality oil is best for this, it’s the “sauce” to the pizza so we want this to be flavorful and enjoyable. I like to use an extra virgin olive oil.
  • Seasonings. This is very important for flavoring the flatbread! Garlic powder, salt, and oregano.
  • Garlic. Fresh minced garlic cloves are the perfect aromatic for this flatbread.
  • Fresh Tomato. I like to use vine ripe tomatoes for this one, the size is perfect for the margarita flatbread. You can also use roma tomatoes.
  • Fresh Mozzarella. I love to use fresh Mozzarella, it melts the best. It typically comes in liquid and can be found in the specialty cheese aisle. Of course, shredded Mozzarella will also work just fine.
  • Fresh Basil. You can’t have margarita flatbread without fresh basil leaves. They balance everything out wonderfully. This goes on last because basil browns easily with heat.
  • Balsamic Glaze. Also known as balsamic reduction. I buy this at the store, I love this condiment for several recipes. You can make your own but I find it easier to just use this balsamic glaze. Its found in the vinegar and oil section in the grocery store.

Recipe FAQ’s

What can I use instead of flatbread?

If you can’t find a flatbread you like, use naan bread instead. Both work great.

Can I use regular balsamic vinegar?

Regular balsamic vinegar is not as sweet and is much more watery. I wouldn’t suggest it. I would suggest skipping the balsamic if you don’t have a glaze to drizzle.

How do I make my own balsamic glaze?

You can make your own balsamic glaze by mixing 2 cups good quality balsamic vinegar and 1/2 cup brown sugar or white sugar. Simmer on medium/low heat for about 15 minutes, whisking often until it’s thickened and sticks a bit to a spoon.

Recipe Pairings

This recipe is on the lighter side. I typically pair it with a Fall Salad or my Healthy Vegan Kale Salad. You can also add pepperoni or salami to the flatbread to add meat to this dish.
