Why Make Canned Salmon Burgers

Salmon burgers are a summer staple, they really change things up and are a lighter option to ground beef burgers. They are a bit more elevated too!

  • Easy to make. No prep work needed, just add everything to a bowl and mix!
  • Versatile. These canned salmon burgers pair with so many toppings and sauce options, just like my Spicy Chicken Burgers.
  • Full Flavor. These burgers are full of delicious flavor from seasoning and fresh herbs.

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients to make this recipe on a counter in small bowls.

All other ingredients and measurements can be found in the recipe card towards the bottom of this post.

  • Canned Salmon. This is the base of the burger. You can use canned tuna or fresh diced salmon if desired.
  • Egg. This helps keep the ingredients together.
  • Breadcrumbs. This adds moisture and keeps the ingredients together. Use gluten free breadcrumbs if needed.
  • Greek Yogurt. This add moisture and creaminess to the burger. Sour cream will also work.
  • Seasonings. Dried basil, garlic, onion powder, pepper, oregano, mustard powder.
  • Soy Sauce. This seasons the burgers and gives them umami.
  • Fresh Dill.
  • Olive Oil. To cook the salmon burgers.
  • Onions. To make crispy caramelized onions.
  • Fresh Lemon For garnish.

Recipe Variations

  • Make it low carb, skip the bread crumbs if needed. The patties won’t stick together as well so please be gentle when cooking or baking them.
  • Make it dairy free. Skip the yogurt if needed. Use 1 -2 Tbsp dijon mustard instead.

Steps To Make This Recipe

Steps to make this recipe in white ceramic bowls.

Step One. Start the crispy caramelized onions (optional). Heat and oil a pan on medium heat, add thinly sliced onions. Let them sauté for about 4 minutes. Turn the heat down on the pan and continue to let the onions cook down until they get browned and caramelized, turning often. Keep a close eye on them and practice patience. This can take 15-25 minutes!

Step Two. While the onions on are on low heat and cooking down, add all the canned salmon ingredients to a large bowl (salmon, yogurt, dill, seasonings, soy sauce, breadcrumbs, eggs). Mix well with a spatula or hands.

Step Three. Form the patties. I form 4 and gently flatten them a bit.

Step Four. Heat the grill on medium/high heat. Cook for about 5 minutes on each side. Air Fry; set to 375º and cook for about 8 minutes. In the skillet; heat an oiled pan to medium heat add the patties to the pan, cook on each side for about 6 minutes or until they are browned and cooked warm through.

Step Five. Assemble the burgers! I put mine on brioche buns with dijon mustard and butter lettuce. I finish them off with the caramelized onions.

Recipe Pairings

Looking for options to serve these salmon burgers with? I have you covered. You can serve them as a meal or make them to top salads for more protein. My Simple Greens Salad would be perfect with these. You can also try my Lemon Kale Caesar, or Strawberry Salad. Both would be delicious.

Other great side dishes to consider are my Lemon Feta Orzo Salad, Grilled Zucchini Salad, Avocado Corn Salad or Crispy Homemade Fries. Parmesan Crusted Brussel Sprouts or Potatoes also pair great.

Recipe Tips

  • Don’t overcook the burgers, they will be dry if you do. Just be sure to heat them through (to cook the egg).
  • Cook the onions on low and slow! Be careful not to burn them.
  • Serve with yummy condiments. I highly recommend serving with dijon mustard (so good!)
  • Add extra ingredients for more flavor. You can also add 1 Tbsp of capers for a little pizazz.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use canned tuna?

Canned tuna would work great in place of the salmon if needed.

What toppings work well with canned salmon burgers

Besides the caramelized onions, pickles or more fresh herbs make for great toppings. I also love avocado slices and butter lettuce with these burgers.

Can Salmon Burgers be made ahead of time?

Yes, patty them, store in the fridge and cook when ready to eat or you can cook them and reheat them throughout the week.
