Why Make Pumpkin Spice Chai Latte

Skip that trip to Starbucks, this homemade pumpkin chai latte recipe beats store-bought coffee any day! It’s so easy to make from scratch and you get the warm, comforting pumpkin flavors with just a few simple ingredients.

  • Easy to whip up. You’ll only need 10 minutes to make this cozy drink!
  • Vegan and dairy-free. My version is naturally vegan, dairy-free, and made using only using natural ingredients, so no added sugars and artificial flavors.
  • Customize your drink. It’s easy to customize your drink at home. You can make an iced latte, a dirty chai, or you can add a pumpkin cold foam to it. There are so many options!

Ingredient Notes

  • Almond milk. I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk, but you can use any type of milk you like. Whole milk, oat milk, soy milk, it’s up to you!
  • Chai flavored tea. I used two Chai tea bags to make two mugs of pumpkin latte, you can definitely double the amount if you want to make more 3-4 cups.
  • Maple syrup. You can also use honey or brown sugar. You can adjust to how sweet you want your latte.
  • Pumpkin pie spice. Buy pumpkin spice from the store or make your own spice blend with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and cloves.
  • Pumpkin puree. I used canned pumpkin puree for convenience. Of course, you can make your own homemade pumpkin puree too. Add a little more for extra pumpkin flavor!
  • Whipped cream. Optional ingredient. You can use dairy-free whipped cream!

All other ingredients and measurements can be found in the recipe card towards the bottom of this post.

Variations

Iced Pumpkin Chai Latte. Make the pumpkin spice latte as instructed, let it cool, and then transfer it to a glass filled with ice.

Dirty Chai. Make a dirty chai by adding 1 cup of brewed coffee or a shot of espresso to the latte.

Pumpkin Cream Cold Foam. In a small bowl or frother, combine heavy cream, milk, pumpkin purée, pumpkin spice, and maple syrup. Froth it until creamy and slightly thickened. Then, pour it over the chai tea with milk mixture.

Steps To Make Pumpkin Chai Latte

Step One. In a small saucepan, heat almond milk on low. Add the tea bags in and let them “steep” for about 4-6 minutes depending on how strong you like the flavor of chai.

Step Two. Press the tea bags firmly with a spoon when taking them out to be sure the flavor infuses the milk. Don’t let the milk bubble, just let it get nice and warm.

Step Three. Keep the stovetop on low. Add in maple syrup, pumpkin purée, pumpkin spice, salt, vanilla, whisk or mix in well to ensure no lumps. Again, don’t let the milk burn or bubble, just let it get nice and warm.

Step Four. Carefully pour the pumpkin spice latte into 2 mugs. Top with whipped cream and add a cinnamon stick for garnish. Enjoy!

Expert Tips

  • Warm the milk slowly to prevent it from curdling. Keep the heat low and stir while letting the tea bags steep.
  • Taste as you go! You may want yours a little sweeter, add some extra maple syrup if you’d like.
  • Whisk pumpkin puree until smooth. Pumpkin purée can sometimes clump, so whisk it thoroughly with the spices, salt, and vanilla until it’s nice and smooth.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use pumpkin pie filling instead of pumpkin purée?

It’s best to use plain pumpkin purée, as pumpkin pie filling often contains added sugars and spices that could change the flavor of your latte.

What type of chai tea should I use?

You can use any type of chai tea—bags, loose leaf, or chai concentrate.
