Why Make This Recipe

This pan fried feta is luscious, tastes very decadent but it’s a breeze to whip up when entertaining. This recipe can be made ahead and reheated. You can easily make this recipe gluten free. I love feta, and when it’s warmed with a crunchy crust it’s so addicting.

Ingredients Needed

Ingredients needed to make the recipe in small bowls on a counter.
  • Feta. High quality feta, one block.
  • Panko Breadcrumbs. Any breadcrumbs will work but panko are typically the most crunchy.
  • Seasoning. garlic powder, salt, italian seasoning, black pepper, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes.
  • Egg. For an egg wash.
  • Olive Oil. To pan sear the feta.
  • Sun Dried Tomatoes. In oil is best. This is for topping. They are optional.
  • Basil. Fresh basil.
  • Honey. To make hot honey!
  • Lemon. Zest and 1 tsp of the juice.
  • Toasted bread, crackers or pita chips. For serving.

Steps To Make This Recipe

Pan Fried Feta, breaded in a bowl.
  • Step One. Make the hot honey. Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl or small jar. Set aside.
  • Step Two. Next prepare feta. Take block and gently lay on a plate. Pat dry with a paper towel. In a medium bowl, mix breadcrumbs and seasonings (garlic powder, italian seasoning, salt black pepper) together.
  • Step Three. Warm olive oil in a skillet or pan on medium high heat. In a shallow bowl, whisk egg. Dredge (dunk) the entire block of feta in the egg. Then quickly place it into the breadcrumb mixture. Be sure all sides of the feta is covered well. You can gently press the feta and breadcrumbs down onto the cheese. If you have a lot of leftover bread crumbs left, dunk in the egg wash again and roll in the breadcrumbs again.
  • Step Four. Once the olive oil is hot, turn heat to medium and place feta in oil. Cook for about 3 minutes on each side or until the breadcrumbs are browned and crispy.
  • Step Five. Place feta on serving dish while warm. Drizzle honey over it generously. Add basil, tomatoes, lemon zest and juice over the top and enjoy with pita, crackers or bread!

Recipe Pairings

The pan fried feta is great as an appetizer. If you want a few more apps to serve with it I suggest my Kale Crunch Salad, Burrata Pesto, Baked Shrimp Skewers or a Spicy Cucumber Salad.

Recipe Tips

  • Be gentle with the feta! Otherwise it can crumble apart.
  • Keep the stove heat on medium, the breadcrumbs/panko can burn easily.
  • Feel free to soften the feta by microwaving for 30 seconds JUST before serving.
