Why Make Maple Chicken
Maple chicken is a delightful culinary creation that brings together the savory richness of chicken with the sweet and earthy notes of pure maple syrup. This combination results in a dish that is not only easy to prepare but also bursts with flavor, making it a favorite for both casual family dinners and special occasions.
You can have a delicious dinner ready in 30 minutes just like my Tuscan Chicken Skillet. This is a major crown pleasure, my family LOVES this recipe and it works wonderfully as a meal prep dish. You can customize the sides to your liking, I prefer Maple Chicken with rice and broccoli. You can also pair it with Spicy Cucumber Salad.
Key Ingredients Needed
Chicken Breasts. Boneless, skinless chicken breasts work best. Try my Sheet Pan Sweet Chili Chicken meal as well!
All Purpose Flour. This is to coat the chicken with, it gives the maple chicken a light crisped coating.
Maple Syrup. Use a high quality maple syrup you love! This will be a key flavor in the recipe.
Hot Sauce. This adds a wonderful touch to the maple sauce. I use Franks Buffalo Sauce or Cholula.
Seasonings. Garlic, onion powder, paprika, salt, pepper, thyme (fresh or dried).
All other ingredients and measurements can be found in the recipe card below.
Recipe Variations
Chicken Breasts. Chicken thighs will work great in place of the breasts.
Maple Syrup. Honey will work but use a bit less since honey can be a little sweeter in flavor (In my opinion).
All Purpose Flour. Make this gluten free by using all purpose gluten free flour. Corn starch or arrow root will also work well.
Broccoli. Zucchini or bell peppers will work in place of the broccoli.
Steps To Make This Recipe
Step One. If using, start rice and cook according to the package. If the chicken breasts are large, cut them in half in equal sizing. This will ensure quicker and even cooking. Gather the ingredients. In a large shallow bowl, add the flour and the listed chicken seasonings. Whisk the flour and seasoning together well.
Step Two. Lay the chicken in the seasoned flour and coat both sides well. Place on a plate and continue with the rest of the chicken (photo 1). Heat a large skillet on medium heat, add the olive oil. Once the oil is glistening and hot, add the chicken breasts to the skillet. Cook the chicken for about 8-10 minutes on each side. Cook until about 160-165º internally (photo 2).
Step Three. While the chicken is cooking, make the maple dijon sauce (photo 3-4). Add all the ingredients to a bowl and whisk well to ensure it’s evenly mixed.
Step Four. Chop up broccoli or veggie of choice into bite sized pieces, add it to the pan cooking the chicken. Let the veggie cook down a bit while the chicken cooks.
Step Five. Once the chicken is close to being done, add the butter to the pan followed by the maple dijon sauce. Turn the heat on the stove down to low and bring the sauce to a simmer.
Step Six. Let the sauce simmer for about 3-5 minutes or until chicken is finished cooking and the broccoli is softened. Serve over rice and garnish with maple sauce from the pan and chopped green onions.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. You can freeze these for up to 2 months.
Maple Chicken FAQs
While any maple syrup will work, using pure maple syrup is recommended for an authentic and robust flavor. The grade of syrup can influence the intensity of the taste, with darker grades offering a more pronounced and complex flavor.
No, this dish isn’t overly sweet. It has a great savory flavor from the seasonings and there is a little salty bite added with the hot sauce.
Recipe Tips
Pat the Chicken Dry. Before coating in the seasoned flour, pat the chicken pieces dry with paper towels. This helps the flour adhere better and promotes better caramelization during cooking.
Monitor Internal Temperature. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the chicken. I cannot recommend a reliable digital meat thermometer enough! Ensure it reaches 165°F (74°C) to guarantee that it’s cooked through while remaining juicy.

SO happy to hear this!
I really enjoyed this recipe, but doubled the sauce since 1 1/2 pounds of chicken was going to go a long way. I also didn’t use the hot sauce because my wife doesn’t like it.
