Golden, seasoned chicken and cheese-filled tortellini are tossed in a silky garlic Alfredo sauce for this Creamy Garlic Chicken Tortellini Alfredo that’s ready in just 30 minutes. I make the sauce with heavy cream, fresh garlic, and freshly grated Parmesan so it melts smooth and coats every piece of tortellini without turning grainy. After testing different dairy options, heavy cream gave me the creamiest, most reliable sauce, while half-and-half also works well. It’s rich, garlicky, and feels a little indulgent without being complicated.

The Extra Step That Makes the Chicken Worth It
I definitely didn’t want to the chicken in this recipe to feel like an afterthought. A few simple choices make the finished pasta taste much more balanced and flavorful.
- Season the chicken before it hits the skillet. Garlic, onion, basil, and paprika give the chicken plenty of flavor on its own instead of relying on the Alfredo sauce to do all the work.
- Sear it until golden. Browning adds savory flavor and gives the chicken better texture against the creamy sauce and cheese-filled tortellini.
- Let it rest before slicing. Giving the chicken a few minutes to rest helps keep it juicy while you finish the Alfredo and tortellini.
- Keep the Alfredo simple. Butter, fresh garlic, heavy cream, and freshly grated Parmesan make a rich homemade sauce without flour or a jarred shortcut.
While the chicken rests, the sauce and tortellini come together at the same time, so the whole dinner is still ready in about 30 minutes.

How to Keep the Alfredo Sauce Smooth and Creamy
Alfredo sauce is simple, but the heat and ingredient choices matter. These are the details that make the biggest difference in keeping the sauce silky instead of grainy or separated.
- Use heavy cream or half-and-half. Heavy cream gave me the smooth, most reliable sauce, and half-and-half also worked well.
- Keep the heat gentle. Let the cream come to a gentle simmer, not a hard boil. High heat can make the sauce separate and makes it harder for the cheese to melt smoothly.
- Turn the heat down before adding the cheese. Stir in the Parmesan gradually over low heat so it has time to melt into the cream instead of clumping.
- Use freshly grated Parmesan. It melts more evenly than pre-shredded cheese and gives the Alfredo a smoother texture.
- Add pasta water only if you need it. The sauce should already be creamy and thick enough to coat the tortellini. If it feels too thick after adding the pasta, loosen it with a small splash of reserved pasta water.
- Serve it right away. Alfredo thickens as it sits, especially once the tortellini goes in. so this pasta is creamiest straight from the skillet.

How to Time the Chicken, Tortellini, and Sauce
The easiest way to keep this dinner on the table in 30 minutes is to overlap the steps instead of waiting for each component to finish before starting the next.
- Cook the chicken first. Once it reaches 165°F, transfer it to a cutting board to rest while you move on to the sauce.
- Build the Alfredo while the pasta water heats. Melt the butter, cook the garlic, and start warming the cream while you bring a separate pot of salted water to a boil.
- Cook the tortellini while the sauce simmers. Tortellini cooks quickly, so it should be ready right around the time the Alfredo is finished.
- Bring everything together at the end. Drain the tortellini, slice the rested chicken, finish the Alfredo, then gently toss everything together until coated and warmed through.

Creamy Chicken Tortellini Alfredo (30 Minutes)
Ingredients
- 3 medium boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper
- 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
- 1 pound cheese tortellini pasta, fresh or frozen
- Freshly chopped Italian parsley or basil, for garnish
- Red pepper flakes, for garnish
For the alfredo sauce:
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 4-5 gloves garlic, finely minced
- 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
- 1 3/4 cups freshly grated Parmesan
- Pinch of salt and pepper
Instructions
- Start the chicken. Pat the chicken breasts dry and season both sides with the garlic powder, onion powder, dried basil, paprika, salt and pepper. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chicken and cook for about 5–7 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through to 165°F. Transfer to a cutting board to rest.
- Start the garlic alfredo sauce. Wipe the skillet clean. In the same skillet once its been wiped, reduce the heat to medium-low and add the butter. Once melted, add the minced garlic and a pinch of salt and pepper, cook for 30–60 seconds, stirring often, until fragrant. Pour in the heavy cream and stir well. Bring to a gentle simmer.
- Cook the tortellini. While the cream sauce gently simmers on low, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the tortellini according to the package instructions. Reserve about ½ cup of the pasta water before draining (just in case you need it later to thin the sauce).
- Finish the Alfredo. Reduce the skillet heat to low. Gradually stir the Parmesan Romano into the cream sauce until melted and smooth. Only if needed, add a splash of reserved pasta water to loosen the sauce
- Add the chicken in. Slice the rested chicken into bite-sized cubes. Add the drained tortellini to the Alfredo sauce and gently toss until completely coated. Add the cubed chicken back to theskillet and toss everything together until warmed through.
- Serve. Remove from the heat and garnish with chopped Italian parsley or basil, red pepper flakes and additional Parmesan Romano if desired. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Heavy cream: Heavy cream gave me the smoothest, most reliable Alfredo sauce. Half-and-half also works, but I don’t recommend whole milk because it caused the sauce to seize in testing.
- Cheese: Use freshly grated Parmesan Romano for the smoothest sauce. Pre-shredded cheese doesn’t melt as evenly and can make the Alfredo grainy.
- Chicken: Chicken breast thickness can affect cooking time. Cook until the center reaches 165°F, then let it rest before slicing.
- Pasta water: Reserve about ½ cup before draining the tortellini. Only add it if the finished sauce needs loosening.
- Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheating: Reheat gently over low heat or in short microwave intervals. Add a splash of heavy cream or half-and-half if the sauce has thickened.
